This is in response to Dustin at http://dustindd.blogspot.com/2011/07/my-lifelong-love-affair-with-enigma.html since I'm having a hard time posting a comment there.
Great article. I'm a hard core Enigma fan. It was by accident that I heard "Sadeness" on the radio that fateful day in 1990. I was just flipping through stations & stopped when I heard the most amazing, sensual sounds pouring from my speakers. I fell for it immediately. I consider Enigma New Age music but it's in a class by itself. I loved not knowing who Curly M.C. was at the time but I'm glad to know more about Michael Cretu. It doesn't take away from my listening experience. Once I heard Enigma, I went searching for anything New Age. It is the reason I have turned my back on the mainstream crap today. Yes, today's music is pure B.S. How it has brainwashed the masses into believing it's the best thing since sliced bread is beyond me. I will say what I've been saying for a while. 'This bubble gum, candy coated pop music is a total waste of brain cells. But, then again, this music doesn't require deep thinking. It's superficial, generic, cookie cutter music with lyrics to match.'
I listen to Enigma on a daily basis. It will always be my favorite music no matter who comes along in the music industry. 3 years is a long time to wait for a new Enigma album but I'm not one to put Enigma on the back burner & forget the music existed. Die hard fans like myself wouldn't move on.
I love "Distorted Love". I get it. Fans take these lyrics as they are without really digging to find true meaning. Maybe it's because they've been conditioned to the shallow music blaring from the radio day in & day out. Anything deeper than "Baby..ooh, baby" could get confusing, I guess.
I'm an author & incorporate Enigma music into my thought & writing process. In fact, "Beyond the Invisible" was the theme song to my vampire novel. I use Enigma in my sequel, too. It just fits. I credit Enigma in my book. I want readers to know who Enigma is & that Cretu's music is inspiring. I can't write without something 'enigma' playing on my computer.
Try "Inception" by Silverstate & Amethystim's "Enchantment". "Inception" has a sampling of Michael Cretu's voice. I'm also a Deep Forest, Enya, Delerium fan. Look up "Hello and Welcome Dusted Version" on Youtube. The introduction starts out with 'Toccato and Fugue". I know Cretu has used that song before. I'm disappointed that this doesn't get played in clubs. (I swore one day when I have the money, I would build a dance club around Enigma and its remixes. Culture, anyone?).
It's such a shame when radio stations play the same old tedious songs. Why don't they play Enigma? Selling as many as he has, Cretu deserves to have it aired. He's sold more than all these newbies, yet they play these like crazy. Maybe it's addicting to people who don't know any better or people who haven't had the privilege of Enigma. I'm tired of Justin Beiber, Perry, Manaj, Keisha, etc.
I do like the idea of a collaboration with a music star but the mention of Madonna? No. I like her songs of old but the newer stuff, not so much. I wonder if Enigma fans would see Cretu as using big celebrity names to gain more recognition as selling out? Some popular singers you've mentioned--Sarah, Enya & Deep Forest--I could see that working.
Another reason I love Cretu's take on music is because he uses people I've never seen until now. He kept it different & original, playing music no one's ever heard before. But to go with who's popular right now WOULD be career suicide, IMO. Who's big right now? Beiber & Minaj+Enigma=PAIN. Besides, their lyrics could make me go into sugar shock. I don't want 'cutsie-pootsie' music all tied up neatly & wrapped in a pink bow. I want something to get my creative juices flowing & to spark some mental stimulation. Enigma is the perfect fit to my life. It's like a book & each CD is a chapter into the life of Enigma.
